Phase 1 / Phase 2 |
Major items completed in Phase I:
- Developed 30 miles of 300’ wide fuel breaks (2000 acres).
- Developed one reservoir and two springs for fire control, wildlife, and watering sources for goats/sheep in Phase II.
- Polygon burned 500 acres with 2000 acres planned for this winter and spring.
- Started a long-term nesting bird monitoring program at 16 different sites – to help determine the effects of our “on the ground” treatments.
- Continuing work on long-term grazing/browsing trial with UC Cooperative Extension.
- Continuing our Red Legged, and Yellow Legged Frog telemetry research through BLM and Humboldt State University.
In preparation for Phase II we have:
- Received a USFS Economic Recovery Grant, and Chico State Foundation Grant to develop marketing infrastructure for meat goats and hair sheep. Should be completed by Spring of 2005.
- Applied for, and will probably receive, a Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Grant (SARE) to determine nutrient quality of the chaparral species we are working with.
